Taking heart in Psalm 121

We brought her crib on vacation with us.  We have a nice pack ‘n play, and my sister-in-law found a rental place that delivers cribs and other baby gear to you beach house (for a nice price).  But my husband and I decided to just pack up Emmy’s crib — along with her sheets, bumper, mobile, and side-music-thingy and take it to Florida with us.  We set her crib up in our room and let her play in and near it as we got settled in.  Now, on our 2nd full day of vacation, she’s telling us when she’s ready to go “nigh-nigh” and sleeps all through the night as if at home.  The only difference is that at home, when she wakes up, she’ll play a bit before calling for us.  Here, she wakes up, sits up, and then excitedly says “Hi Mama!  Hi Dada!” —- the best alarm clock ever.

There’s certainly something nice about the familiar, the normal.  I have to admit, I’m fighting some disappointment on this trip… we can’t be at the pool (or that scary, scary beach!) for too long before Emmy tuckers out and practically falls asleep in her float.  So, we load up the gear and head back to the house.  She lays down in her familiar bed, and sleeps (forever).  I think my idea of this vacation had a lot more time out of the house… with an awake baby.  But, I’m glad we gave her what she needed to be secure and comfortable and able to rest.

My three and a half year old nephew was crying a few minutes ago, “I want to go home and sleep in my bed!”  Poor guy.  It’s hard to know why we’re here in this new house, and as he questioned today, “I know God made the ocean, but who’s making those waves?”  convinced there was something very large and very scary churning that water.  Of course, he’s exhausted from being in the pool all day.

I’d like to have my bed here for the week… actually, that’s not quite true.  I hate my bed.  But I like it better than the one we’re on this week :-)
