We ran some errands later tonight and passed by the same gas station where we filled up earlier.

Up 30 cents.

30

Blech.

3.59 at Marathon July 31, 2008

I think I’m going to add a new “regular topic” to my blog.

Whenever I fill up the tank, I’ll share the cost per gallon.  Fun, eh?

I won’t share which location I fill up at, to keep crazy stalkers at bay, but I’ll try to share the general location.

Probably just like everyone else, each time we fill up, I think about my first car and how much it cost to get a full tank.  I had a 97 Saturn.  It was purple.  I could generally fill up for $12 — and that was a lot!  I got my license several months after gas rose above $1.00.

Yesterday, the gas light came on, but we were out in a ummm “nice” area of town and gas was about 20+ cents higher than it was at home.  We put in $10 just to get us home safe, and then filled up today at a local Marathon for $3.59.

Friends to help Manchester family

bury young mom

By CAROL ROBIDOUX

Takea Harris was so ready for motherhood and the next chapter of her life. At 28, she was newly single and preparing to raise her newborn son, Zion, with the help of her family.

Now her family will be going it alone.

Harris, 28, died Thursday. The following day her mother went to the hospital to pick up baby Zion, who was born prematurely and had spent the first three weeks of life in the hospital’s care.

Shortly after being released from the hospital after his birth, Harris developed an infection in the area of her C-section incision, said her friend, Hope Rivera. She died a few weeks after giving birth.

“Takea got to see her little boy in the hospital a few times, but then she had to go back into the hospital herself,” Rivera said. “She got a nasty staph infection and then developed a blood clot that traveled to her heart. We still can’t believe she’s gone.”

Rivera is one of a close circle of girlfriends who have known Harris for years.

“She was so ecstatic about the baby. She felt so blessed to have a beautiful son,” Rivera said.

“At this point, her family can’t afford to bury her. So all of her friends have been doing whatever we can — selling jewelry, having yard sales. Yesterday, I finally decided to set up a fund for her at the bank.”

She said because Harris’ family has not been able to make final arrangements for her, they have hesitated to place a death notice in the newspaper.

“How sad is that? They couldn’t even let people know she died because they couldn’t say when they would be burying her,” Rivera said.

Rivera said Harris and her family, which includes two younger brothers, moved to Manchester from Boston years ago. Harris was a 1999 graduate of Memorial High School.

“This isn’t the way it was supposed to be. It’s sad enough that Zion will never know his mother. As her friends, we just felt like someone needed to do something to help Takea’s family,” Rivera said.

Donations can be made to the Takea Harris Fund, at TD Banknorth, 141 S. River Road, Bedford 03110.

O Gladsome Light July 30, 2008

O Gladsome Light of the holy glory of the Immortal Father: heavenly, holy, blessed Jesus Christ. Now that we have come to the setting of the sun, and behold the light of evening, we praise God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. For meet it is at all times to worship Thee with voices of praise, O Son of God and Giver of Life.  Therefore all the world doth glorify Thee.

My first NameDay July 28, 2008

St. Irene Chrysovalantou

Leaving all the world behind with its impermanent glory, thou wast wedded unto Christ, the King immortal and holy, bringing Him as precious dowry thy maiden beauty and thy trophies won through abstinence over demons. O Irene, our righteous Mother, entreat thy Bridegroom to show His mercy to us.

For my first namesday, my husband gave me a beautiful Russian icon of the Theophany.  Once I find my camera (yes, it’s misplaced again), I’ll take a photo of it.  It was very sweet of him to remember how much I love the different pictures of the baptism of Christ.

I’m going to try again and do the Commitment to Loveliness this week.  Last time, I didn’t do so hot…

1. Finish gathering up items to donate to my friends‘ yard sale to help with their adoption funds.
2. Try to make it to the knitting group from church this week.
3.
Work on gifts for a few friends’ new babies (arriving in the fall and winter)
4.
Collect a few new recipes for dinner
5. Use my new double jogging stroller to take walks with the girls

Apparently, also while we were on vacation, one of my radio stations closed up shop.

Oldies 103.1 has been replaced with…. country :-(

I’m not thrilled, and have yet to find a new station to replace my pre-set.

Oh yes, I got it.

And I love it.

I’d had my eye on it for a few years (seriously).  I got to use my in-laws’ on vacation and my husband bought me one yesterday.  Whoo-hoo.
